Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced the sale of a damaged vehicle in a car auction that sold for $9,000 to an American businessman.
The car, a 2004 Toyota Prius, was sold by the dealer of a Toyota dealership in Osaka, Japan, on April 12, according to METI.
The vehicle, which was purchased by a dealership in the US in 2014, is now in the possession of the owner.
The seller, who was not identified, said that the car was sold on April 13, just a day before the auction.METI says that the owner will be compensated by selling the car at a special auction in Tokyo, which will be held on May 10.
The seller is not being named.
The auction house that sold the car, the Toyota Japan Car Auctioneers, told the Associated Press that it did not know of any previous car auctions that had resulted in such a large amount of sales.
The Japanese car market has been reeling from the loss of hundreds of thousands of cars in recent years, as the global financial crisis has affected carmakers and consumers alike.
