In 2018, car salespeople were not required to use ads when offering the chance to buy a new car, but Craigslist is now cracking down on ads that use them as a means of obtaining a sale.
The new rules are the result of an investigation by a California-based company called Cars for Sale, which discovered that car listings were using Craigslist’s ad system to promote cars for sale, according to a press release.
The ads were appearing on the site without a buyer’s consent.
Craigslist also noted that Craigslist’s ads were showing up with a seller’s name and contact information, which could be used for a buyer to reach out and inquire about a sale, but not for a car to be sold.
Craigslist did not specify how many cars had been advertised, but it did say it had “identified and taken steps to stop such practices.”
According to the company, the company has made “many changes” in its advertising rules, including “providing the buyer with a notification about any ads that are being posted to the site.”
Craigslist said that it would “continue to work with car dealers and other buyers” to remove the ads from the site.
